Fai D Flourite is a young wizard (from appereance, his real age is yet unknown) from Celes Country, who is always seen smiling cheerfully and teasing his comrade Kurogane with various rather rediculous nicknames. Along the four main characters he's the most outgoing and energetic one, with a happy-go-lucky attitude, though he has some melacholic moments sometimes and doesn't want any of his comrades get too involved with himself, being afraid to cause them danger.
Nevertheless he cares for both Sakura and Shaolan very much from the beginning. He vowed to not use his magic, not even to save his own life, which he doesn't value much at all, but later breaks his vow several times to protect his comrades.Apart from his overwhelming magical powers, he's a very skilled fighter, which even increases due to him becoming a vampire. Fai hides a great sadness beneath his everlasting smile, which Kurogane talks to him about several times but Fai's behaviour gets worse after him needing to feed from Kurogane's blood to survive, he even addresses Kurogane by his real name and isolated himself more and more from the others, being depressed, much colder and truly solemn.
After the group dealt with things in Celes, he is able to give a real smile instead of the fake one he always hid himself behind and starts calling Kurogane nicknames (like Kuro-mun, Kuro-wan, Mr.Black, Blacky and such) again. He always blamed him for his twin brother's death, who was the real one named "Fai", him being "Yuui", but knows now that it wasn't his fault. He took his brother's name to remember him until he would have made him come back to life, which wasn't possible in the end.

Background: Fai's real name is revealed to be Yuui in Chapter 155 of the manga. "Yuui" was born in the Country of Valeria along with his twin brother named "Fai" as sons of the country's second prince. The twin's father died soon after, leading their mother commiting suicide. The new king of Valeria thought of them being a bad omen and tried to decrease their combined magic and the misfortune they brought by lockong them up in an area where magic couldn't be used and time wasn't flowing. They were seperated from each other, Fai was shut into a tower while Yuui was confined at the base of the tower. Both of them tried to escape but failed. They apperantly stayed there for several years while the valley was filled with corpses due to the king going insane and later killing himself in front of Yuui's eyes, leaving the twins as the only people alive in Valeria, doomed to stay there "until the world's destruction".

Fei Wong Reed offered both of them to free one of them. Fai chose to save Yuui and was killed by falling down the tower, though Fei Wong Reed changed Yuui's memory, making him believe it was his fault that his brother died, because he valued his own life more than his brother's and to forget the two cureses that were placed upon him by Fei Wong: One who makes him kill the first person who owns greater magic than he does, that person becoming Sakura, and another one who will be activated when Ashura is killed by someone else than him, that being Kurogane, and trapping everyone in Celes Country.

Yuui is later rescued by Ashura, who lets him live with him in Lival Castle at the neighbour country of Celes, where he earns the title of "D" being the mightiest magician of Celes. His reason for living on still is his brother Fai, who's corpse he gives one of Sakura's to prevent him from rotting and placing him into a lake in the castle. His biggest wish is to revive his brother. When he is asked for his name by Ashura he refers to himself as "Fai" and is given the family name "Flourite" by Ashura, it being the precious talisman mineral of Celes Country. He was tutored by Ashura and discovered him being only able to learn fighting magic, but no healing magic, though Ashura told him that his smile had the power to heal others . Being truly thankful for Ashura's support, Fai promises to protect Celes from all of it's enemies.

Ashura wanted to be killed by Fai someday when his magic would lead him to kill people to gain more powerful magic, because he knew about Fai's first curse, he placed a phoenix-shaped seal upon Fai's back to prevent Fai's magic from growing.
When Ashura really started killing innocent people several years later, Fai wasn't able to kill him, because he didn't want to, so he put the king of Celes into a deep sleep on the bottom of the lake where his brother's corpse as well was and told Chii, who he created using the other of Sakura's feathers he possessed after his mother's image, to inform him when the king woke up. He used his magic after this, to travel dimensions to Yuko Ichihara, the witch of Dimensions, in order to have his wish to "never go back to Celes" granted and to begin his journey through the dimensions with Kurogane, Shaolan, Sakura and Mokona.

When Fai and his comrades arrived in Tokyo, where they met the vampire Kamui, his twin Subaru, vampire hunter Seishiro's brother Fuma and several other characters from X, Fai's left eyeball is ripped out and eaten by the, now soulless and discovered clone, Shaolan, causing Fai to almost die of shock. The magician whishes to die, in order to prevent Clone!Shaolan from using the half of his magic, that his blue eye consists -Fai's whole magic's source are the blue colour of his eyes- but Kurogane safes him by feeding him his and Kamui's blood, which turns him into a vampire with enhanced healing powers and the need to feed from Kurogane's blood to survive.

During the fighting tournament in the country of Infinity Fai's first curse is activated when Sakura gets two feathers back, one from Chi and has more magic than Fai, him having only one half of his normal amount. Fai stabs Sakura, but her body and sould are dragged into two different dimensions, the body being in Celes, the soul in a dream world. Fai offers his sight as a price to go back to Celes to get Sakura's body back but instead every one of the travellers (Shaolan, Mokona, Fai and Kurogane) gives the prizemoney to Yuko.

After arriving in Celes Fai's past is revealed to Kurogane, Mokona and Shaolan by Ashura, which leads Fai to feel bad about lying to them. He fights to protect Ashura first but ends up attacking him because Ashura wanted to harm Shaolan and Sakura and is killed by Kurogane. After this Fai finally remembers the truth about his brother's death. When they try to move on to the next world Fai's second curse is activated trapping Fai and Kurogane in Celes. Kurogane then cuts off his left arm to free Fai and himself because it is worth replacing Fai because of the magic in it Fai placed on it before to make it contain Kurogane's sword.

They arrive in Nihon Country (Kurogane's home dimension) next where Fai punches Kurogane as revenge and trades his remaining magic for a new mechanical arm for Kurogane, but doesn't lose his life or sight becuase he's living from Kurogane's blood. Fai reveals that he knew Sakura being a clone all along when she is killed during the fight between the two Shaolans and offers to go with Shaolan /the real one/ and Kurogane to save both of the Sakuras. The night before the group leaves for Clow Country, where Sakura is from, Fai is thanked by Shaolan for always caring about Sakura. When they leave Fai and everyone else wear the same clothes as at the beginning of the journey.

Fai landed on the floor beneath some shattered buildings. He looked at his surroundings and noticed that none of his comrades were with him. "Where am I?", he asked himself, looking around. Thisplace didn't look like Clow Country at all. Clow Country should be a Kingdom in the sand, sunny and warm and without these destroyed buildings everywhere, from what Sakura had told him. Sakura-chan... Fai sighed. They had wanted to rescue the princess... or rather both of them. And now he had ended up here.
Fai turned around watching the buildings. Something felt familiar to him. Like a person he had met before. He started to walk around. Maybe it would be possible to find that person and then the others? He didn't want to admit it, but he began to feel scared. Fai knew, that he would die without Kurogane around. After all... he was now a vampire..., who needed the blood of his "E".
